Health CS Suspends 8 NHIF Hospital Managers for Exploiting Kenyans’ Funds

Medical CS On Monday, June 19, Susan Nakhumicha suspended eight National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) hospital branch managers accused of swindling Kenyans through underhanded means.

When speaking to the media, Nakhumicha criticized cartels for conspiring with branch managers to execute the scheme.

Nakhumicha instructed the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to coordinate with the NHIF board to conduct investigations and submit a detailed report within seven days.

In addition, she instructed the NHIF board to take action against employees suspected of collaborating with cartels to defraud innocent victims.

Nakhumicha invited the exposé’s whistleblower to assist EACC investigators with their investigations.

“I wish to express my disappointment in the ministry employees who participated in this heinous conspiracy. I met with the chair of the NHIF board and instructed him to launch an investigation, which included inviting the whistleblower to provide information about this heartless and ruthless cartel.

Nakhumicha commanded the NHIF board to share a preliminary report within 48 hours and instructed the board to take action against culpable staff members.

She also instructed the divisions of the ministries responsible for relations to act immediately and issue a comprehensive report.

“I have made a special request to the EACC to coordinate with the NHIF to investigate how these cartels siphon resources. This report is due within seven days.

“In my previous message, I emphasized that hospitals should reopen while awaiting payment, but some facility owners took advantage of the situation to rip off Kenyans. In addition to verifying current outstanding payments, we are undertaking verification of all payments to identify any discrepancies, she explained.

Joykim medical center in Meru Central, St Peters Orthopaedic and Surgical Hospital in Kiambu County, Afya Bora Hospital in Mwea, Kirinyaga, and Joy Nursing and Maternity Hospital in Malewa Street, Kamukunji are the eight hospitals in question.

Other hospitals include the Afya Bora Hospital Annex in Wanguru, Mwea, the Jkim Hospital in Nkupu Imenti South, the Beirut Pharmacy and medical center, and the Amal Hospital Limited.

Nakhumicha also instructed the facilities to evacuate and transfer their in-patients within 24 hours.

In addition, the health CS ordered an audit of the lifestyles of all NHIF employees to ensure that each member could adequately explain their wealth portfolio about their income. She stated that all inconsistencies would result in stern legal action.
