Harris’ Lead Over Trump Narrows to 46% vs 43% – Poll
Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris holds a narrow lead over Republican Donald Trump, with 46% of voters supporting Harris and 43% backing Trump in the race for the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election, according to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll.
The poll, conducted over four days and completed on Monday, showed Trump, who previously trailed Harris by six points in a Sept 20-23 survey, gaining favor among voters on economic issues. Some voters seem influenced by his claims linking illegal immigration to crime, although these assertions have been widely discredited by researchers and analysts.
The poll’s margin of error was approximately 3 percentage points.
Respondents ranked the economy as the most pressing issue, with 44% favoring Trump’s approach to handling the “cost of living” versus 38% who supported Harris on the same issue.
When asked about key economic concerns the next president should address, 70% of respondents prioritized the cost of living, with few mentioning the job market, taxes, or personal financial improvement. Trump led Harris in these areas, but Harris was seen as the better candidate to address income inequality, with 42% supporting her stance, compared to 35% for Trump.
Trump has drawn support by highlighting concerns about immigration, with current immigration levels in the U.S. being the highest in over a century.
In the poll, 53% of voters agreed that illegal immigrants pose a public safety risk, while 41% disagreed. Earlier polls showed a more evenly divided opinion on this issue, with 45% agreeing and 46% disagreeing in May.
Trump has repeatedly focused on crimes committed by illegal immigrants during his campaign rallies, despite limited data on the immigration status of criminals and studies indicating that immigrants are no more likely to commit crimes than U.S.-born citizens.

Harris has consistently led Trump in all six Reuters/Ipsos polls since she announced her candidacy in late July. The latest results show her with a slight edge, leading Trump 47% to 45% among voters most likely to participate in the election.
The Pew Research Center estimates that about two-thirds of eligible voters participated in the 2020 presidential election.
Harris is perceived to have sharper mental acuity than Trump, with 55% of respondents agreeing that she is “mentally sharp and capable of handling challenges,” compared to 46% who said the same about Trump.
Although national polls like Reuters/Ipsos offer insights into voter sentiment, the U.S. presidential election is decided by state-level Electoral College results, and outcomes in seven battleground states will likely determine the winner. Polls indicate a tight race in these key states, with many results falling within the margin of error.
Harris entered the race after Democratic President Joe Biden withdrew his reelection bid, following a weak debate performance against Trump in June.
At the time, Trump was viewed as the leading candidate, bolstered by his perceived strength on economic issues after years of high inflation during Biden’s presidency.
The most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll surveyed 1,272 U.S. adults online, including 1,076 registered voters, with 969 of them considered likely to vote on Election Day.
