Haiti Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s Flight Set to Arrive in Haiti Diverts Mid-Air

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry arrived in Puerto Rico on Tuesday, March 5, amid speculation about his location, arising after he departed from Kenya over the weekend.

Insiders familiar with the situation, speaking to CNN, disclosed that Customs and Border Protection federal agents in the United States have taken charge, as the Haitian leader endeavors to go back to his strife-torn nation.

Puerto Rico is an island in the Caribbean situated about 600 kilometers to the east of Haiti.

Additionally, as per the Associated Press, Henry quietly landed in New Jersey via a chartered flight from Kenya, having agreed with President William Ruto’s administration. The deal entails the deployment of 1,000 Kenyan officers for a peacekeeping mission in the country.

The Prime Minister had plans to travel to the Dominican Republic, located on the same island as Haiti called Hispaniola. However, during the flight, there was a change in route, and the destination was shifted to Puerto Rico.

The duration of Prime Minister Henry’s stay in Puerto Rico and the uncertainty surrounding his return to his home country remains unclear.

After the recent turmoil in Haiti, various nations, such as the United States of America and the Dominican Republic, have halted all air travel to the affected region.

This transpired following the leadership of a coalition of gangs by ex-police officer Jimmy Cherizier, who took over the country’s primary airport and several government entities. This happened shortly after Henry arrived in Kenya.

The disorder led to the demise of four police officers and the liberation of numerous inmates from two prisons, with the gang seizing command over most of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince.

Cherizier aims to destabilize the system and topple Henry’s leadership, as per his statements. Additionally, the gang leader cautioned the Prime Minister against returning to the country.

Haiti’s Finance Minister, Patrick Boisvert, announced a state of emergency on Sunday due to the unrest that has resulted in 300,000 individuals being displaced from their homes.
