Haiti Leader Ariel Henry Who Struck Deployment Deal With Ruto Faces Ouster From Rebel Leaders
Haiti’s Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, is in jeopardy of being removed from office following a confrontation on Tuesday, February 6, initiated by a rebel leader.
Henry, who was selected by President Jovenel Moïse shortly before his tragic assassination in 2021, agreed with President William Ruto to send Kenyan police officers to the unrest-ridden Caribbean nation.
The Prime Minister had committed to resigning from his role and was scheduled to depart from office on Wednesday.
Haiti, a nation without a president elected through democratic means, witnessed a surge of protests preceding Henry’s resignation, with tensions escalating across different areas of the Caribbean country.
On Tuesday, Guy Philippe, a leader of the rebel faction, joined protesters by making a televised appearance and calling for the resignation of the Prime Minister.
Philippe, who was released from a US prison in September 2023, spearheaded a rebellion in 2004 that ousted the then-president, Jean Bertrand.
The Prime Minister, on the other hand, rejected the leader of the Brigade for the Security of the Protected Area and instructed agents to disarm him.

“We’re telling the police and the army that we have zero problems with them whatsoever,” Fritzner Jean Pierre, commander of the brigade in Ouanaminthe stated.
“If they put themselves against us, however, what happens to them is their responsibility.”
In September 2023, an agreement was signed at the Kenyan Mission in New York, United States, with the presence of President William Ruto and Haiti Prime Minister Ariel Henry. The agreement aimed to foster cooperation between the two nations.
“As the leading nation in the UN-backed security mission in Haiti, we are committed to deploying a specialized team to comprehensively assess the situation and formulate actionable strategies that will lead to long-term solutions,” Ruto promised.
The proposal received support from the U.N. Security Council, but the High Court intervened with a verdict, deeming the decision unconstitutional and putting a stop to it.
