GSU Officers Convicted: Ksh48M Fine and 30 Years Behind Bars for Drug Trafficking

Two General Service Unit (GSU) officers found guilty of drug trafficking were sentenced to pay Ksh48 million and serve 30 years in prison or face 35 years in prison on Thursday, July 6.

The Isiolo County chief magistrate court ordered the GSU officers to pay Ksh24 million and serve 30 years in prison for transporting 598 kilograms of drugs to an unknown location.

The pair was apprehended in 2020 following a police operation, and they were subsequently charged with drug trafficking at the Isiolo Magistrates Court.

Isiolo Police station issued the following statement: “Two General Service Officers who had been charged with the offense of trafficking in narcotic drugs (598 kilograms) were sentenced as follows by the chief magistrate’s court in Isiolo.”

“Each defendant was fined Ksh24 million and sentenced to 30 years in prison. In the event of failure to pay the fine, each will serve an additional five years in prison.”

Kenya’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act (Cap 245) prohibits drug trafficking.

In addition, the court determined that the pair violated the Police Officers Ethics Act, which prohibits law enforcement officers from engaging in illegal activities.
