Grassroots Elections Set to Resume: ODM Reveals New Date

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party declared on Monday, November 4, that grassroots elections are set to take place at the end of this month. This announcement follows a six-month delay, initially planned for April due to widespread flooding across the country.

In a communication, Emily Awita, the chairperson of the National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC), indicated that the elections will occur on November 27 in all 47 counties from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

โ€œThe elections will include thirty (30) party officials. With ten from each of the three (3) committees at every polling unit/center. The Mainstream, Women League, and Youth League,โ€ the notice specified.

The committee has also provided several guidelines for the election process. Detailing the positions available in each of the three specified categories.

For the mainstream category, elections will be held for a chairperson, vice chairperson. Additionally the secretary, organizing secretary, treasurer, women leader, youth leader, and three committee members.

In the women and youth league categories, the positions contested will include chairperson, secretary. The organizing secretary, deputies, treasurer, and three committee member seats will also feature.

The commission also emphasized inclusivity for minorities and individuals with disabilities. Stating in the fifth guideline that โ€œPersons with disabilities and minorities should be integrated into the three (3) categories.โ€

They outlined that the voting method will involve consensus or a show of hands. Necessitating close collaboration between county election coordinators and polling unit/center coordinators.

Members wishing to familiarize themselves with the grassroots election guidelines are encouraged to download the party’s handbook on primaries, nominations, and election rules from the partyโ€™s website.

The structure and membership of the sub-branch, branch, and county coordinating committee will remain unchanged, and the NECC will announce the timeline for elections in these categories following the completion of polling unit/center elections.

After announcing their intention to hold grassroots elections at the end of April earlier this year, the NECC was compelled to indefinitely postpone them due to heavy rains and requests from Busia, Siaya, Kajiado, and Wajir counties affected by flooding.

The NECC stated, “After evaluating the ground situation and considering the requests, we announce the temporary postponement of the elections originally scheduled for April 27th, 29th, and 30th, 2024, until conditions improve.”
