Govt to Sell Contested Athi River Land Amid Demolitions

East African Portland Cement (EAPC) announced on Tuesday its intention to transfer a portion of the contested Athi River land to homeowners and Kenyans amidst the ongoing demolitions ordered by President William Ruto.

The company announced in a notice published in the local newspapers that it would regulate the sale of the land in the coming days.

The corporation has designated three parcels of land, including LR 8784/144, 145, and 653, for the process.

Priority will be given to those who are already residing on the land before other prospective purchasers are considered.

“First and preferential priority shall be offered to the parties currently occupying sections of the said parcels. Those in this kind of situation are advised to state their claim of the same within 14 days from the date of this notice,” the notice read in part.

“At the expiry of this notice, all unclaimed portions shall be competitively offered to the general public on a willing buyer-willing seller basis.”

Kenyans interested in participating in the process have been instructed to visit the EAPC offices on Namanga Road for any questions regarding the upcoming exercise.

The notice was issued after residences on the contested land were demolished on Friday, October 13, per Ruto’s orders.

“I have given clear instructions to the management here that all speculators, people who have held titles to pieces of land for 10, 15, 20, 30 years without developing them, should be revoked so that we can give it to people who want to use this facility,” he ordered then.

There are also allegations that wealthy investors are interested in purchasing the government’s stake in the failing cement manufacturer.

The Trade Ministry announced in July that it had found a buyer for the Ksh15 billion state stake in Portland Cement.

Industry Principal Secretary Juma Mukhwana informed Parliament that the Ministry had authorized the strategic investor to acquire a 30% stake in the company.
