Govt Sets Deadline for Mandatory Health Insurance Registration
Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha declared on Monday that the government would initiate a household registration campaign for the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), which is slated to replace the existing National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).
Initially planned for January, the registration drive is now set to kick off in May 2024, according to Nakhumicha.
Nakhumicha made these statements during a meeting focused on facilitating the transition from NHIF to the new Social Health Authority (SHA). She emphasized that the registration process would run concurrently with NHIF’s service provision.
The government remains steadfast in its commitment to launch the services of the new authority on July 1, as previously announced.
Nakhumicha reaffirmed the government’s goal of having the Social Health Authority operational by July 1, 2024, with household registration scheduled to start in May.
However, this isn’t the first time the government has adjusted the registration timeline for the new authority.

Initially slated for January, the registration dates were later pushed to March 2024.
Despite these announcements, the registration process did not begin, with the Ministry of Health insisting it would be completed by June 30.
During Monday’s meeting, CS Nakhumicha inaugurated the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) asset verification process.
The verification aims to identify NHIF’s assets and liabilities across its headquarters, branches, satellites, and various Huduma Centers before their transfer to the Social Health Authority (SHA).
Nakhumicha stressed the importance of the verification exercise in ensuring a smooth transition without disrupting service delivery.
However, the announcement of a new registration date coincides with Members of Parliament urging for a pause in registration due to concerns over data security.
