Govt Insider Explains Third JKIA Blackout(Exclusive)

The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Sunday experienced another blackout paralyzing services at the international airport.

Photos and video clips uploaded on social media by some users depicted the busy airport in total darkness including in the terminals.

The blackout, which is the third this year, was likely part of the power outage that rocked most parts of the country. This is the third outage since August.

Speaking to PoliticalPulseChat, a source familiar with the matter noted that only terminals 1A and 1E were affected.

“It is a national blackout but did not affect the entire airport. It only affected Terminal 1A and Terminal 1E,” the source explained.

“That was sorted and the power was restored. The other parts of the airport were not affected. The power was out for about 15 minutes.”

“The other parts of the airport including Terminal 1B, 1C, ID, and Terminal 2 were not affected. That also includes the State Pavillion,” the source added.

Travelers had posted clips of the blackout lamenting that services were at a standstill at the international airport, which is ranked among the busiest in Africa.

“This is JKIA, with frequent blackouts. Welcome to Nairobi, our international airport,” one of the travelers sarcastically stated.

The airport was also plunged into a power outage in late August which Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen attributed to system failures.

At the time, KAA indicated that one of the generators serving JKIA’s Terminal 1A and the parking silo failed to start.

“I am sorry for what has happened at JKIA with the blackout. There is no excuse worth reporting, and there is no reason why our airport is in darkness,” Murkomen stated at the time.

“I will be announcing the decision we will make tomorrow at 9 am at JKIA after a meeting with the leadership of the airport. Once again, I am sorry.”
