Govt Confirms University Entry Cut-Off Mark for 2024 KCSE
Kenyan universities are preparing for a significant influx of students this September, following the release of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination results by the Ministry of Education.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba confirmed that the minimum university admission grade will remain at C+, leading to an increase of 46,000 students compared to 2023. This marks a 3% rise in university admissions, with the number of qualified candidates growing from 200,000 in 2023 to 246,291 in 2024.
โThe universities will admit more students because we are maintaining the C+ grade as the cutoff for admission,โ Ogamba announced on Friday.
The C+ cut-off grade has been the benchmark for public university admissions since the Ministry adjusted it from the previous standard of B- for females and B for males.ย ย

Ogamba also addressed recent rumors about a potential increase in the cut-off grade to B-, labeling the claims as โfalse and misleading.โ He urged parents and students to rely solely on official Ministry communications.
The 2024 KCSE candidates represent the third group under the controversial student-centered funding model, which has already placed a strain on government finances. Despite a court ruling declaring the funding model unconstitutional, Ogamba emphasized that it will continue with recommended amendments to address raised concerns.ย ย
โThe student-centered funding model will proceed with necessary adjustments, as outlined by the Ministryโs committees and the courtโs recommendations,โ Ogamba reassured.
The Ministry has also pledged to address potential challenges arising from the increase in student numbers by ensuring adequate funding for public universities to facilitate smooth learning experiences.
