Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura provided a breakdown of the retirement benefits disbursed by the government to former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his mother, Mama Ngina Kenyatta, on Friday, May 31.

In a press briefing held in Nairobi, Mwaura disclosed that Uhuru received a lump sum payment of Ksh48 million, determined based on his salary for the two terms he served as Head of State.

Additionally, Uhuru is granted a monthly allowance of Ksh1 million to cover expenses such as entertainment, housing, and fuel. Moreover, he receives a pension of Ksh1.6 million per month, totaling Ksh2.6 million monthly.

It’s important to note that all financial benefits provided to Uhuru Kenyatta are exempt from taxation. For medical expenses, he benefits from a Ksh20 million medical cover, catering to treatment both domestically and internationally.

Furthermore, the government facilitates transportation for Uhuru and Mama Ngina, who possess a fleet of 12 vehicles, including models exceeding the engine capacity limit stipulated in the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act of 2003.

Among these vehicles are two Toyota Land Cruisers with a 4,000 CC engine capacity, a Mercedes Benz with 5,000 CC, four Toyota Prados (2,700 CC each), two Range Rovers (4,200 CC each), and a Subaru.

The government also provides the duo with seven fuel cards for refueling purposes, covering maintenance expenses, and replacing vehicles after three financial years.

To address concerns regarding the size of delegations accompanying the former president during international engagements, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommended a streamlined team of 10 staff members, including various roles such as private secretary, Aide de Camp, doctor, advisor, protocol officer, hospitality officer, security officers, and media/press persons. This recommendation was approved by the Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service Hon. Felix Koskei, as part of government-wide austerity measures.

Uhuru maintains a staff of 33 individuals at his office near the State House, some of whom hold positions equivalent to Principal Secretaries, ensuring that the office of the retired president operates efficiently.
