Gov’t Announces Recruitment of Police in 2025

The National Police Service (NPS) has announced plans to recruit new cadet officers later this year. According to Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, the recruitment exercise will take place in the second half of 2025. This will mark the first such hiring in two years.

Omollo explained that the upcoming recruitment is part of the recommendations made by the National Taskforce on Police Reforms, which was chaired by Chief Justice Emeritus David Maraga.

He noted that financial challenges had delayed the recruitment process. However, the government is now ready to proceed as part of its ongoing police reforms.

The PS emphasized the importance of diversifying entry levels in the police service, highlighting that hiring cadet officers would provide an alternative pathway into the force. “We are working on reforms to ensure not all recruits enter the police force at the same level,” Omollo said.

Kenya has been facing a significant drop in the ratio of police officers to civilians, creating serious security concerns for its citizens. Despite these challenges, the country has pledged to support international security efforts.

President William Ruto has committed additional personnel to the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, aimed at restoring stability in the country.

In October 2024, Kenya sent 300 officers as part of the first batch of the new deployment. Another 300 officers were deployed by the end of November, adding to the 383 officers already stationed in Haiti.

President Ruto highlighted funding and equipment shortages as key challenges during his speech at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2024.

He appealed to international partners for support to ensure the mission’s success.

The Haiti mission aims to deploy 2,500 officers by January 2025 to help bring peace and order to the troubled nation.
