Govt Alert: Foreign Powers Warned Encouraging Ruto-Raila Truce

Alfred Mutua, cabinet secretary for foreign affairs, urged diplomats on Thursday, July 20, to respect Kenya’s political democracy amidst their efforts to broker a truce between President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Mutua stated during a meeting with diplomats in Nairobi that foreign powers must adhere to international standards regulating diplomatic relations.

However, he indicated that the government was prepared to engage the opposition in constructive dialogue.

Mutua emphasized that the government was also concerned about the devastation of property and loss of life that occurred during the recent protests called for by Azimio.

“The solution will never come from violent demonstrations, but rather from creative solutions.” We encourage you to take an active role in this voyage to reform Kenya.

“I want to reassure you of our commitment to uphold the rule of law, protect human rights, and maintain peace and security,” he said.

In contrast, he implored foreign agencies to verify information during the protests, citing the Geneva-based Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

The diplomats were instructed to remark on issues by internationally recognized norms.

“Not only was this statement false, it was also deceiving, and it appeared to have been written in support of a propaganda campaign by those opposed to the democratic will of the people.

“The speed with which an international organization that is tasked with verifying information thoroughly published false information led to only one conclusion: that the statement was premeditated,” he added.

Mutua was responding to an offer made by the diplomats in which they expressed their willingness to assist the two leaders in achieving a ceasefire.

On Thursday afternoon, Azimio will conduct demonstrations in the Central Business District (CBD).
