Governor Wavinya Ndeti Removes Education CEC Philip Kilonzo

Governor of Machakos Wavinya Ndeti fired Education CEC Philip Mutua Kilonzo on Monday, less than a month after reassigning him from the Lands portfolio to Education in a cabinet reshuffle.

The county administrator explained in a statement that Kilonzo’s subpar performance necessitated the decision.

โ€œI reviewed his performance and concluded that it is untenable for him to continue holding office of CEC-M,โ€ read the statement in parts.

Governor Ndeti added that the decision was also influenced by the need to maintain high service standards for the residents of Machakos County.

Following the transition, Mutua’s docket was re-assigned to the CEC in charge of Roads and Transport, Consolata Mutisya.

In her statement, the Governor did not indicate whether she will soon appoint a new Roads and Transportation commissioner. In the interim, it is anticipated that Mrs. Mutisya will assume both positions.

Governor Ndeti’s decision to discipline the high-ranking official comes less than a month after he reshuffled the cabinet, transferring several ministers and chief officers to other dockets.

After the reshuffle on September 20, 2023, Kilonzo had scarcely settled into the education docket.

Governor Ndeti reassigned Kilonzo from the Lands docket to the Education docket during the reshuffle.

Kilonzo is the second CEC to leave Wavinya’s cabinet after Onesimus Muasya, the former Youth, Sports, and Gender CEC-M, resigned to pursue other interests.

Notably, during numerous political events, Governor Ndeti has repeatedly stated that she will not hesitate to fire underperforming employees.

โ€œMachakos voters are our bosses and all county government workers including myself are answerable to them. I will not sit and watch as things go wrong. Even if it means somebody going home, so shall it be,โ€ Wavinya noted.
