Governor Natembeya Dares Ruto Allies: ‘Impeach Me Already!’
Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has challenged President William Ruto’s loyalists to proceed with their alleged plans to impeach him, claiming it would amplify his role as a voice for the public.
Speaking on Kameme FM, Governor Natembeya alleged that government supporters were holding secret meetings in neighboring counties to strategize his removal due to his political stance, which he described as “pro-ground.”
“They are holding night meetings with the sole agenda of impeaching me because I have openly stood for the people,” Natembeya stated.
The governor accused Ruto’s allies in western Kenya and beyond of attempting to use their majority in Parliament to silence him politically.
“They need to understand that I was elected under the opposition. The opposition’s role is to contribute to governance debates and bring fresh ideas. They want to force submission, but I won’t comply,” he asserted.
Defiant Stand Against Political Opponents
Natembeya welcomed the impeachment threats, arguing that it would provide him with a broader platform to advocate for public interests. He linked his political woes to alleged ties with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and claimed that National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa was orchestrating the campaign against him.
“Ichung’wa is just a loud noisemaker. He’s afraid because people are gravitating toward leaders offering real solutions to their problems,” Natembeya said.
He dismissed accusations by Ichung’wa linking him to past atrocities, specifically the River Yala killings during Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, labeling the claims as baseless and politically motivated.
“In that regime, the current president was the deputy. By extension, Ichung’wa is accusing his former boss of being part of a murderous government,” he retorted.
Critique of Leadership and Governance
Natembeya expressed dismay at the current administration’s performance, particularly President Ruto’s unfulfilled campaign promises.
“I cannot lie to the people that things are okay when they aren’t. Western Kenya deserves better leadership, not empty promises,” he said.
He also criticized what he termed as favoritism in government job allocations, alleging that positions were being distributed based on loyalty rather than merit.
“It’s heartbreaking to see job opportunities being handed out like favors to loyal MPs who distribute recruitment letters at their whim,” he lamented.
Call for Unity and Political Integrity
Addressing claims of his affiliation with Mt. Kenya leaders, Natembeya emphasized that his career success was influenced by prominent figures from the region, including former presidents Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta.
“I owe much of my professional growth to Mt. Kenya leaders. If someone has issues with Gachagua or others, it doesn’t mean I should inherit those conflicts,” he explained.
He urged Mt. Kenya leaders to tone down the impeachment rhetoric and focus on transformative politics.
“Politics is a game of promises—some fulfilled, others broken. Let’s remain calm because there’s always a second chance,” Natembeya concluded.
