Government Spends Over Ksh1 Billion on Foreign Travel in Three Months
A report from the Controller of Budget reveals that the National Government spent just over Ksh1 billion on foreign travel during the first quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year.
The expenditure report, covering July to September 2024, shows that Ksh1.10 billion went toward foreign travel, while Ksh2.49 billion was spent on domestic travel.
The State Department of Foreign Affairs recorded the highest foreign travel spending during this period, using Ksh574.66 million.
This accounted for more than half of the total amount spent by the entire national government on foreign trips.
Other notable spenders included the National Assembly, which used Ksh173.96 million, and the Senate, which spent Ksh80.61 million.
Additionally, the Parliamentary Joint Services allocated Ksh48.42 million to foreign travel in the same timeframe.

The Judiciary incurred Ksh39.56 million in foreign travel expenses, while the office of the Auditor General spent Ksh29.20 million.
The State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services followed closely with Ksh27.87 million.
Smaller amounts were spent by departments like the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, which recorded Ksh10.98 million, and the State Department for Labour and Skills Development, which used Ksh11.10 million. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission reported Ksh14.68 million in expenses for foreign travel.
On the lower end of the spectrum, the State House spent Ksh5.77 million, while the Office of the President used only Ksh1.34 million for international travel.
The Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary spent Ksh9.38 million, and the Office of the Deputy President allocated Ksh1.72 million to foreign travel.
This spending breakdown highlights the varied levels of foreign travel expenses across different government offices and departments during the reporting period.
