Government Appoints Dr. Richard Lesiyampe as Acting CEO of Kenyatta National Hospital
The government has named Dr. Richard Lesiyampe Leserian as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Kenyaโs largest public referral and teaching hospital.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale made the announcement in an official statement, praising Dr. Lesiyampe as an experienced health administrator capable of steering KNH through its current reforms.
โDr. Richard Lesiyampe brings extensive expertise that will help strengthen KNHโs leadership, clinical services, and management systems,โ Duale noted.
He also emphasized that KNH remains the top referral facility in the country and a vital pillar in driving healthcare reforms and expanding Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Before this appointment, Dr. Lesiyampe was the Acting CEO at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), where he helped boost the hospitalโs reputation and operational capacity. With his move to KNH, Joshua Clinton Ombiri Okise will now serve as Acting CEO at JOOTRH to ensure a smooth leadership transition.

Located in Nairobi, Kenyatta National Hospital has been a leading healthcare institution in East and Central Africa since 1901. The facility has a 1,800-bed capacity, including a 209-bed private wing, 50 wards, 22 outpatient clinics, and 24 surgical theaters. It also employs over 6,000 staff and provides advanced services such as neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, orthopedic care, and burns management.
As a teaching and research hub, KNH plays a central role in training healthcare professionals and supporting Kenyaโs national health agenda. Dr. Lesiyampeโs leadership is expected to improve service delivery, streamline hospital operations, and align KNH with key government health priorities.
