Gloria Orwoba Ousted as UDA Shocks with Bungoma Replacement

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has officially announced a vacancy in the seat that was previously held by nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba. In a gazette notice published on Wednesday, May 21 was confirmed as the date the seat became vacant.

The declaration follows a decision by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to expel Senator Orwoba from the party. Her removal was linked to claims of gross misconduct and violations of the partyโ€™s constitution and code of conduct. These issues had been under review by UDAโ€™s internal disciplinary bodies for several months.

UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar issued a press statement on Monday, stating that the partyโ€™s National Executive Committee (NEC) had unanimously approved Orwobaโ€™s expulsion. The decision was based on recommendations made by the UDA Disciplinary Committee, which investigated her conduct.

According to the committeeโ€™s findings, Senator Orwoba had committed several offenses that went against the partyโ€™s principles. These included making repeated public comments that were viewed as damaging to the partyโ€™s image. Additionally, she failed to respond to disciplinary summons and did not provide any formal defence when accused of misconduct. The committee said her failure to engage with the disciplinary process showed a lack of respect for the party’s rules and leadership.

As a result of her expulsion, UDA also withdrew its official support for Orwobaโ€™s nomination to the Senate. The party has since forwarded the name of Consolata Wabwire Wakwabubi to the Senate as her replacement. Wabwire, who is from Kimilili in Bungoma County, is expected to take over the role once the necessary legal and parliamentary procedures are completed.

In an attempt to retain her seat, Orwoba had moved to court to challenge the partyโ€™s decision. However, her legal battle hit a dead end when the High Court in Nairobi dismissed her application. Justice Lawrence Mugambi ruled that Orwobaโ€™s case was procedurally flawed and therefore could not proceed. He noted that the application failed to meet basic legal requirements and could not be admitted for a full hearing.

This latest development marks the end of Orwobaโ€™s controversial time in the Senate, where she had often drawn public attention, sometimes for her outspoken nature and other times for pushing boundaries on issues she believed in. Her exit also highlights the growing trend of political parties tightening discipline within their ranks and enforcing internal rules more strictly.

UDA, which is the ruling party, has in recent months taken disciplinary action against several members accused of defying party policies. The leadership has maintained that discipline and loyalty to the party’s constitution are key to keeping order and unity among members.

As the Senate prepares to welcome Consolata Wakwabubi, political observers are closely watching how the changes will affect party dynamics, especially within the ruling coalition. For now, the spotlight remains on the importance of party discipline, due process, and the consequences of going against the party line in Kenyaโ€™s current political landscape.
