Generous Kenyans Gift Babu Owino Ksh370K for Birthday- He Pleads for It to Stop
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has once again made waves across Kenya, this time for personal reasons.
On October 10, Owino celebrated his 35th birthday, which coincided with Mazingira Day, receiving an overwhelming show of support from Kenyans. Through Mpesa, well-wishers sent him a total of Ksh370,000. The MP took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his appreciation, saying, “A big thank you to all Kenyans who are sending me Mpesa for my birthday today.”
Despite the generous support, Owino urged Kenyans to stop sending more funds, acknowledging the financial struggles people are facing. He noted, “We are at 370K so far. I suggest you stop, please. That money, let it do something else. I feel what you are going through as a Kenyan. God bless you all.”
Owino’s public image has been bolstered by his fearless stance on national issues and his strong connection with everyday Kenyans. His vocal opposition to the government, especially after some Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) members joined President William Ruto’s Cabinet, has cemented his role as a key figure in Kenyan politics. He is often seen as one of the few remaining voices holding the government accountable, especially after Raila Odinga’s recent cooperation with Ruto.
This week, Owino once again made headlines by skipping a Parliamentary session on October 8, where the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was being debated. Owino later explained on X that he chose to prioritize more pressing matters for his constituents instead of attending the session.
Owino has always been outspoken on issues such as the proposed takeover of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by India’s Adani Group and the introduction of the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

He’s also been a strong advocate against high taxation and the New University Funding Model, choosing to focus on these important issues over what he described as political theatrics.
Earlier this year, in February, Owino led recovery efforts in his constituency following a tragic gas explosion that claimed seven lives and injured over 280 people. His swift mobilization of resources from the government and private donors won him further admiration. He has since been dedicated to rebuilding the community and fighting for justice for the victims.
Amid Kenya’s ongoing struggles with economic difficulties and political instability, Owino has maintained a close bond with his constituents. His decision to skip certain political debates to focus on critical issues like unemployment, healthcare, and taxation highlights his commitment to addressing the real concerns of everyday Kenyans.
The birthday gifts Babu received from the public are seen as a testament to the trust and appreciation many have for him. His call for Kenyans to redirect their generosity to more urgent causes speaks to his understanding of the hardships they face.
At 35, Babu Owino seems well-positioned to continue being a significant force in Kenyan politics, tackling both personal and national challenges with focus and dedication.
Even as he continues to make headlines, one thing is clear—Babu Owino’s influence reaches far beyond the walls of Parliament, with Kenyans standing behind him in moments of crisis and celebration alike.
