Githungza MP Gathoni Wamucha has criticized Kenyan MPs for not effectively representing their constituents in Parliament.

Wamuchomba claimed on a Sunday evening talk show that her Kenya Kwanza colleagues have not made independent decisions and have avoided rectifying the government, which has worked against the interests of Mount Kenya.

In particular, Wamuchomba questioned why Mt Kenya legislators remained silent on the ‘one citizen, one vote and one shilling’ discussion after President William Ruto prompted them to do so.

According to the representative, this is the clearest indication that regional legislators do not care about the electorate.

“Parliament is an independent institution and lawmakers have the right to stand firm and represent their people and not simply echo the government’s position in the chambers,” Wamuchomba said during the talk show.

To bolster her argument, Wamuchomba cited parliamentary voting patterns, citing the Finance Bill 2023 vote of Mt Kenya legislators as an example.

Wamuchomba asserted that the time has come for Mount Kenya’s elected officials to coalesce and address the obstacles preventing residents from cooperating.

This, she stated, would ensure that the leaders serve the people and fulfill their mandate.

“As Mt. Kenya MPs, recent developments in the political scene need to be an eye-opener for us. If we fail to unite and organize ourselves properly, we might have a repeat of what happened in 2018 which is the handshake government,” the MP said.

Wamuchomba added her support for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who is facing widespread criticism for his shareholders remark.

The remark has been broadly interpreted as a call for increased development in regions that voted decisively for President William Ruto in the most recent election, at the expense of other regions.

“We as Mt. Kenya Mps with DP Rigathi on our side, should rally for more development in our region,” Wamuchomba remarked.
