Gachagua’s Team Stoned by Goons After Bungoma Rally

Tension gripped Chwele town in Bungoma County on Friday, July 4, after a violent mob ambushed a convoy of top opposition leaders shortly after their political rally.

The convoy included high-profile figures such as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, ex-Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangโ€™i, and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya. According to reports, the group was attacked on their way to Kitale, forcing them to flee for safety.

Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, who was part of the convoy, said the group came under a coordinated attack from suspected government-backed goons. โ€œTheyโ€™re firing live bullets and throwing stones at us. We were heading to Kitale when they struck,โ€ Njiru said.

Shocking videos posted on social media showed large crowds hurling stones at the leaders’ vehicles. Some attackers wielded clubs and chased the group from the area.

Former nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba added that some of the attackers had knives and were being protected by police officers. โ€œItโ€™s clear the police are working hand-in-hand with these goons. Theyโ€™re even helping them scatter rallies. This is exactly what weโ€™re likely to see during the Saba Saba protests,โ€ she stated.

Orwoba further disclosed that one of the leaders sustained serious injuries and had to be rushed to hospital. โ€œHe was bleeding badly. He had a deep cut on his head and other injuries across his body. We had to act fast to save his life,โ€ she said.

The opposition leaders are currently touring several counties in Western Kenya to mobilize support and speak out on key national issues, including Gen Z-led protests and claims of abuse of state power.

Despite the attack, the convoy successfully arrived in Kitale, where the leaders continued with their campaign.

Speaking during the rally, former DP Gachagua praised Bungoma residents for their courage and political awakening. โ€œBungoma is proving once again that the power lies with the people. Together, we can correct past mistakes and build a better future,โ€ he said.
