Gachagua’s Stand: Defending the Church Amidst the Shakahola Massacre

Saturday, May 6, Vice President Rigathi Gachagua defended the church and criticized those who condemned all religious leaders in light of the Shakahola massacre.

During the installation of the Reverend Cleophas Oseso as the new bishop of the Nakuru Catholic Diocese, Gachagua urged the clergy to work together to eradicate those who preach false doctrines.

In keeping with this, he emphasized that the church is a reflection of society and that such actions were indicative of society as a whole.

“Criminals will be treated as criminals according to the law, as it is not appropriate to use the massacre in Kilifi to condemn the entire Christian church and clergy,” he stated.

Notably, the DP assured Kenyans that the government would utilize its resources to apprehend the suspects who committed heinous acts while posing as church members.

In addition, he praised the Azimio la Umoja coalition for agreeing to abandon the mass action in favor of a bipartisan strategy.

“We must find a peaceful resolution to our differences. President William Ruto has been magnanimous when the opposition has reached out to him.

“Violence is unacceptable. We welcome the Azimio team to the table for discussions, but in the meantime, we are busy. If it is within the bounds of the law and feasible, we will do it. If not, if they tell us to open the servers, we have no idea,” he noted.

In addition, the DP urged the Church to support the government’s efforts to combat illicit brew by implementing mentorship programs aimed at the youth of society.

Martin Kivuva, chairman of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops, condemned the government’s approach of regulating churches instead of addressing the real issues in Kilifi County.

“Families have lost loved ones, and some do not know where their relatives are. “The government is more concerned with punishing other churches,” Kivuva stated.

He criticized the government for being unprepared for the Shakahola massacre, in which more than 110 bodies were exhumed from the forest.

“It is time for the government to punish those responsible instead of targeting innocent clergy, Imams, and churches,” he remarked.
