On Monday, April 14, Cleophas Malala, the Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), disclosed that the party was on the brink of a succession struggle.

Malala addressed the audience following the revelation that UDA had allocated three positions for Deputy Party Leader, a role traditionally held exclusively by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

He stated that it was unjust to subject the Deputy President to a contest for the position of second-in-command.

“Many parties break due to succession battles. We need a straight command structure,” he explained.

He clarified that Gachagua’s role shouldn’t be subject to election and should resemble that of President William Ruto, who holds the position of Party leader by being the party’s presidential candidate.

“In my view, if we have a party leader who is not voted for as he is the presidential candidate, the same respect should be accorded to Gachagua who was his running mate,” Malala explained.

He mentioned that a petition was already in the works to revise the constitution and transform Gachagua’s position into an appointed rather than elected one.

“We want to make it very clear that UDA is a democratic party. Our constitution says we have 3 deputy party leaders but it also gives National Executive Council (NEC) power to amend the constitution,” he explained.

“Ahead of the National Delegates Conference, we are going to put amendments so we have one Party Leader, one Deputy Party Leader, and other officials

Malala added that a member of the UDA party had submitted a petition to eliminate the three deputy party leader positions.

If approved, the party would appoint one deputy leader and four assistant deputy leaders.

The discussion has arisen amidst a period when some leaders from the Mt Kenya region have supported Ndindi Nyoro, the Member of Parliament for Kiharu, as a potential successor to President William Ruto.
