Gachagua Tells Graduates: “No Jobs! Try Entrepreneurship!”

Vice President Rigathi Gachagua has urged university graduates to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors. Because the government cannot provide enough jobs for everyone.

Gachagua urged the graduates at the 40th Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). And the 9th Pan African University Institute of Basic Sciences Technology and Innovation (PAUSTI). “Mnasema mambo ya jobs? Hapo iko kibarua…I have stated that I am an honest individual. I do not wish to sit here and tell you that there are jobs available. We will create them alongside you,” he said.

“Iko kibarua…wengine mtapanga huko mbele na hao wengine mkuje tufaye biashara.”

As he challenged tertiary institutions to evaluate the impact of their programs further, DP Gachagua urged them to focus on market-oriented courses relevant to Kenya’s economic needs, as white-collar jobs have been decreasing annually.

He stated that the administration led by President William Ruto was laying the groundwork for the creation of digital jobs.

“We are laying the groundwork; educational institutions must provide the necessary skills for youth to become truly global workers from the comfort of their rural homes. The advent of technology will shrink the global office to the size of our palms, he stated.

“We can only achieve inclusive growth if we prepare students not to pass exams, but to solve problems,” This is accomplished by enhancing students’ analytical thinking and creative abilities.”

The Vice President urged the graduates to enter the business world, stating that there are numerous opportunities in entrepreneurship and that they should use the skills acquired in school to improve their lives.

“Be determined and ambitious, and allow no one to deter you. Do not listen to pessimists, prophets of doom, or jealous individuals. Focus on what you possess in life and pursue it. “There is beauty in cultivating an idea and watching it mature,” said Gachagua.

As the government is committed to addressing rising unemployment, he praised the housing program, stating that it would create employment opportunities for various construction industry professionals.

“Throughout two nights, the National Assembly passed the Finance Bill, 2023 to, among other things, establish a housing fund to construct 200,000 homes annually. The DP stated that the government is also allocating resources to the implementation of the Competence-Based curriculum for self-employment skills to combat future unemployment.

“Postsecondary institutions must also modify and adopt their educational model to not only meet the requirements of the new system but also to support the job creation market. It can no longer be about the number of graduates or the prestige of their degrees, but rather the overall impact of their products – their students,” he said.

In addition, he stated that higher education institutions are crucial to the nation’s development through research, technology, knowledge generation, and transfer.

Cabinet Secretaries Ezekiel Machogu (Education) and Moses Kuria (Trade, Investments, and Industry) accompanied the Vice President.
