Gachagua Praises Raila, Reveals 1 Strategy He Wants Mount Kenya Region to Learn From Him
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has praised ODM leader Raila Odinga, sharing a political strategy he wants the Mount Kenya region to adopt.
Gachagua noted that Odinga has remained influential in politics for years, despite not holding any elective office, due to the strong political backing from the leaders around him.
Speaking at the funeral of Eric Mutugi, son of former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti, on January 3, Gachagua expressed frustration with the region’s current political leadership, stating it was a mistake that these leaders were elected.
He pointed out that the political leadership in Mount Kenya is not as strong as Raila’s support base. He admired Raila’s consistency, which has kept him at the heart of every government, despite never becoming President.
“The big loss we’ve faced is because of the quality of leaders we’ve sent to the Senate and National Assembly. Raila Odinga, despite not being President, is in every government because of the quality of leaders he sends to Parliament. We, on the other hand, often choose poorly.”
Gachagua also emphasized the need for stricter vetting of leaders in future elections, aiming to ensure that only dedicated patriots, who would not betray the region, are elected.

“For the 2027 elections, we will carefully scrutinize candidates. We’ll ask about their background, morals, and whether they would sell out the community.”
He accused the current leaders of betraying the region for personal gain, which he believes has led to the region’s struggles, including his impeachment, which he claims went against the wishes of the Mount Kenya voters.
“The problem we face is that our leaders sold us out. They took the money and betrayed our community. That’s why we’re in the situation we are. Moving forward, we need leaders who are proven patriots and will not sell out for their benefit.”
A division started after the 2022 presidential elections, with two rival factions emerging, aligned with the President and his Deputy. The impeachment of Gachagua further deepened the divide, leading to constant clashes between the two camps.
