Gachagua Outlines His ‘Problem’ With Ruto

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua sparked amusement at a Meru stopover with President William Ruto, suggesting to the residents that they request the Head of State to modify his work hours.

As per the DP, he arises at 4 am daily to participate in national service alongside his boss, a timing that Gachagua considers excessively early for his liking.

Nevertheless, the deputy leader mentioned that he faces a challenge from President Ruto, who begins his responsibilities at 3 am every day.

He mentioned that he takes pride in being a Kenyan and serving as Deputy to Dr. Ruto, emphasizing Dr. Ruto’s strong work ethic as a leader.

“I am happy deputizing Ruto because he is a hardworking man. The problem is that he is making us suffer by waking up very early. He insists we have to wake up at 4 am, while he wakes up at 3 am,” he told Nkubu residents in Meru County on January 27, 2024, during the President’s tour in the region.

Nevertheless, as he caused laughter, his appeal to the locals to persuade the president to review and adjust his waking hours fell on deaf ears, as they told him, “You should even be waking up earlier than the President”.

The deputy leader commended Dr. Ruto, praising his continuous efforts over the past year to rejuvenate the Kenyan economy. During this time, he reiterated his assertion that the Kenya Kwanza Government took over an economy in a state of disrepair.

“When Ruto took over leadership, Kenya was about to be auctioned. For the last year, he has had so many problems but for now, the country is doing better,” the DP said.

The opposition rejects Gachagua’s assertion that Kenya Kwanza took over a deteriorating economy, arguing instead that President Ruto’s administration is incapable of delivering on its commitments to the Kenyan people, leading to justifications for its shortcomings.

Under the leadership of Azimio la Umoja, headed by Mr. Raila Odinga, the opposition is advocating for a manageable cost of living for every Kenyan through a comprehensive review and reduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel, lowering it from 16 percent to 8 percent.

In 2023, Ruto’s administration raised the tax on petroleum products from the 8 percent set by his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta.

The relocation has led to a significant increase in the expenses associated with daily life.
