Gachagua Claims Victory in Uniting Mt Kenya Against Rebels Hiding in WhatsApp Groups

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is asserting a successful campaign to unify the politically turbulent Mt Kenya region, though his latest focus has shifted towards fostering unity within the Maa community.

During his address at the 25th Annual Interministries Union Conference held at Inkinyie Primary and Junior School Grounds in Kajiado County, Gachagua dismissed rumors of discontent, attributing them to a few legislators communicating through WhatsApp groups.

Gachagua’s drive to strengthen Mt Kenyaโ€™s political influence has encountered mixed responses. Despite rumors suggesting that a faction of Mt Kenya leaders, including a cabinet secretary and over 20 MPs, are conspiring against him, Gachagua remains steadfast. He claims the dissatisfaction is limited to private discussions rather than public dissent.

“Some leaders are vocal in private but would not dare to voice their opinions publicly. They prefer the anonymity of WhatsApp groups,” he remarked.

Gachagua’s unwavering confidence is evident as he plans to broaden his influence beyond his home base. With claimed ancestral connections to Kajiado, he is preparing a visit to unite the Maa community. His strategy reflects a self-aware approach.

“I am not foolish. How can I advocate for unity within the Maa community if I canโ€™t achieve it in my area?โ€ he questioned rhetorically.

Although Gachaguaโ€™s call for unity is familiar, his recent statements are strategically timed. Earlier in the week, he issued a caution to Mt Kenya leaders perceived as obstructing regional interests, warning of potential political repercussions in the 2027 elections.

“As we gear up for the 2027 elections, be aware that it will be highly competitive. I am attentive to the ground. Significant decisions have already been made,” he warned.

At a wedding in Juja, Gachagua continued to advocate for unity, urging Mt Kenya residents to prioritize collective development over premature succession politics. He reiterated this message at a funeral in Kiambu County, stressing the importance of a unified purpose.

“My appeal is for unity of purpose, and we must cease internal conflicts,” he emphasized, urging leaders to focus on the urgent needs of the people.

Despite his outward assurance, Gachagua faces significant opposition. Critics, including Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri, have accused him of undermining President William Ruto.

In a meeting in Eldoret, a group of MPs and over 300 Kikuyu community representatives gathered to discuss national unity and the regionโ€™s political future.

Kiunjuri’s message to Gachagua was explicit: “We must support the President and the inclusive government as it works to unite all Kenyans.”

As Gachagua strives for both regional and national unity, the tension between his ambitions and the growing resistance within Mt Kenya could shape his political trajectory. Whether his attempts to extend his influence to the Maa community will succeed or face pushback remains uncertain.

What is evident is that Gachagua is facing the challenge head-on, despite the continuing volatility in the Mt Kenya political landscape.
