Former Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria Sounds Alarm Over Emerging Political Group in Mt. Kenya Region- ‘Itungati’
Former Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria has criticized the formation of a politically connected group in the Mt. Kenya region, which he believes is causing security concerns.
According to Wa Iria, this group refers to itself as ‘Itungati,’ a term that he says was historically used to describe the Mau Mau fighters who battled colonial rule.
Wa Iria has called for an investigation into this group, which he argues is creating fear in the region. He pointed out that the Mau Mau were known for attacking white settlers, and he questioned who this new group might be targeting.
The former governor also accused the group of holding meetings in local communities where they pressure political leaders to support them, while making the environment hostile for anyone who disagrees.
He emphasized that although all Kenyans have the right to express their views on the government, it should not be done through intimidation.
Wa Iria also expressed concern that this group is trying to align itself with religious institutions, warning that the clergy should be cautious.
He mentioned a recent incident in Shamata, Nyandarua County, where the group attacked a police officer, highlighting their growing influence and aggression.
Wa Iria stressed the importance of addressing the group with seriousness, fearing that it could lead to bigger problems similar to those seen in the country’s past.

He also accused some lawmakers of supporting the group by misdirecting NG-CDF funds to it.
Although the group portrays itself as a cultural entity, Wa Iria argued that it is not officially registered as one, and it appears to be recruiting members from outside the region.
He promised to invite the President and Deputy President to the county and warned those against the government not to interfere with the visit.
He expressed frustration that opposition groups have made it difficult for the President to even send condolences to families during funerals, a situation he claims is unprecedented in the region.
Lastly, Wa Iria responded to local MPs who criticized his recent appointment to the Public Procurement Regulatory Board, suggesting that the move was an attempt by President Ruto to appease the region.
He questioned why MP Mary Waithera opposed such appointments and argued that more opportunities should be created for the local community.
