Former Mungiki Leader’s Legal Setback: Court Denies Maina Njenga’s Plea Amidst Witness Drama

On Monday, former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga encountered a setback when his application was denied by a Nakuru Court.

Njenga had petitioned the court for the dismissal of charges brought against him and eleven others, alleging that he maintained connections with the proscribed group.

The principal magistrate of Nakuru, Kipkurui Kibellion, dismissed the application because the attorney’s arguments lacked sufficient evidence to support their position.

Some of the witnesses, according to Njenga’s attorneys, were unlawfully converted by the government into prosecution members.

According to a previous prosecution application, the defendants maintained ties to Mungiki, an organization that had been declared illegal by the state.

They were jointly confronted with a maximum of seven charges about their affiliation with a proscribed organization.

Njenga was apprehended by the police in mid-September for unspecified reasons, as disclosed by his attorney, Ndegwa Njiru, who claimed that the seizure was the result of a government operation.

“Client Maina Njenga was finally released by the rogue police hit squad after our press conference,” Njiru stated at the time.

Azimio la Umoja claimed at the time that the government was causing Njenga frustration in advance of a pretrial hearing, after his indictment in July for orchestrating large-scale demonstrations.

Njenga conveyed a sense of assurance in a radio interview on Monday of the previous week that the charges against him would be dismissed.

Moments before being summoned to testify, a witness affiliated with the former Mungiki leader collapsed at the Nakuru Law Courts, before the case was dismissed.

The witness, who had just been presented with a Bible in preparation to begin her testimony, fell abruptly.
