    Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga Granted Ksh.50K Bond and Released

    Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga was released on a bond of Ksh.50,000.

    On Monday, Njenga was arraigned at the Nakuru Law Courtsis on multiple criminal charges, including support for an organized criminal group.

    He was released on a Ksh.100,000 cash bail and a Ksh.50,000 bond or equivalent surety.

    The judge ordered Njenga to refrain from speaking to the press or at public hearings.

    Additionally, he was prohibited from contacting any prosecution witnesses who could compromise the case.

    The court ruled that any violations would result in the cancellation of the bond.

    Njenga was questioned by DCI detectives in Nairobi on Thursday, following allegations that on May 11, 2023, he addressed a meeting in the Wanyororo area of Nakuru County to “encourage support” for the outlawed criminal organization Mungiki.

    He is additionally accused of engaging in criminal activity. He is accused of inviting individuals to the aforementioned meeting in the Wanyororo region. Where he is alleged to have communicated Mungiki-related instructions.

    In addition, he is accused of possessing “a military backpack strap, property of the National Police Service (NPS), that is suspected to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.”

    Police officers fired tear gas canisters at Njenga’s supporters, who had gathered at the DCI headquarters to show their support.

    Additionally, he is under investigation about the recovery of two firearms. And more than ninety rolls of bhang from a home in Ngomongo, Bahati that he is associated with.
