Former MP Dies After Road Accident

Former Laikipia North Member of Parliament, Mathew Lempurkel Lekidime, has died just weeks after being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kenyatta National Hospital.

He was hospitalized following a serious road accident at the Exciting area in Ongโ€™ata Rongai while on his way home.

Lempurkel, who previously served in the National Assembly, had been fighting for his life since the crash six days ago, which left him with severe injuries.

    Past Legal Case

In 2021, Lempurkel was sentenced to one year in prison for assault, a case that attracted national attention.

The incident dated back to 2016, when he was accused of attacking the current Laikipia North MP, Sarah Korere, at Harambee House in Nairobi.

Court records at the time stated that Lempurkel โ€œwilfully and unlawfully assaulted Sarah Korere by slapping her on the left cheek and kicking her on the lower abdomen, thereby occasioning her actual bodily harm.โ€

    Political Career and Advocacy

Lempurkel was widely recognized as a vocal champion of Maa community rights. He strongly pushed for land ownership, cultural preservation, and protection of traditional ways of life.

He first won the Laikipia North parliamentary seat in 2013 on an ODM ticket, defeating four other rivals according to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

In November 2023, he shifted political allegiance from ODM to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

    Philanthropy and Community Work

Before joining politics, Lempurkel was well known for his philanthropy. He served as Executive Director of Ndugu Zangu Christian Community Charitable Trust, a Catholic Church-based organization that transformed lives across Kenya.

The foundation sponsored thousands of children with heart problems to undergo surgeries in leading cardiac hospitals in Italy and other countries.

It also spearheaded key development projects, including piping water from the Ewaso Nyiro River to remote parts of Ol Donyiro and Kipsing in Isiolo County, alongside other multi-million shilling initiatives.
