Former CS Ababu Namwamba Lands New Role
Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has landed a new leadership role as the President of the Africa-China Legal Alliance. He officially took up this position on July 4, during a ceremony at the United Nations Complex in Nairobi.
Namwamba announced that he has also assumed leadership of the Group of 77 (G77) and China from Egypt’s Ambassador, Wael Nasreidin Attiya. The G77+China is the largest coalition of developing nations at the United Nations, working together to represent their economic and social interests on the global stage.
Founded in 1964 by 77 developing countries, the G77+China now includes 134 member states. The group aims to strengthen South-South cooperation and push for shared goals within the UN.
“At a special ceremony held at the UN offices in Nairobi, I officially took over the chairmanship of the G77+China Nairobi Chapter from Ambassador Attiya of Egypt. Kenya is proud to lead this key group in such an important role,” Namwamba said in his statement.

Namwamba also highlighted Nairobi’s importance as a global hub for environmental diplomacy. The city is home to both the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). He stressed the need for member countries to work together ahead of major events such as the upcoming United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA7).
This appointment follows his exit from President William Ruto’s cabinet, which was reshuffled on July 24, 2024. Since leaving office, Namwamba had taken a break from active public service.
Before his role as Sports CS, Namwamba served as Chief Administrative Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2018 to 2022. He was also the Member of Parliament for Budalangi from 2007 to 2017, serving the constituency for a decade.
