Foreign Affairs PS Responds to Kenya Being Pressured to Cut Ties With Israel

Thursday, Principal Secretary of Foreign Affairs Korir Sing’Oei issued a warning to governors and other legislators regarding their interference in the international relations of Kenya.

The PS, who reports to Cabinet Secretary and Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi, further stated that despite the advocacy of Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, Kenya has yet to implement measures to sever diplomatic relations with Israel.

Sing’Oei stated in a statement that Kenya will maintain its calls for an urgent cessation of hostilities and a recommencement of dialogue between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian militia, to resolve the escalating conflict.

Foreign Affairs Korir Sing’oei during a panel discussion at the Africa Now conference in Kampala, Uganda on March 12, 2019.

“Foreign policy is the exclusive domain of the National Government. Kenya abhors the gross violation of international humanitarian law in Gaza,” Sing’Oei emphasized that all government authorities should stick to their jurisdictions.

Anyang’ Nyong’o, the governor of Kisumu, had requested that the African Union instruct its member states to sever diplomatic ties with Israel.

As stated by Nyong’o, the African Union’s solidarity with the Palestinian people of Gaza and the West Bank would be demonstrated through the cessation of relations with Israel.

“The bloody conflict between Israel and Palestine has had a ripple effect on many countries across the world. Progressive forces in Africa, led by the African Union, can not stand by and let this happen,” Nyong’o remarked.

Kenya’s endorsement of Israel was declared by President William Ruto in October, in contrast to the stances of other continental leaders who favored Palestine or maintained a neutral stance.

Ruto condemned the Hamas attack on Israel and expressed Kenya’s condolences to all the victims.

He shifted his position the previous week and now believes that Palestine ought to be a sovereign state.

“We believe that terrorism cannot be an answer to any conflict; neither is occupation. We believe that Palestine should be a free state and we stand for a two-nation solution as a means of resolving the conflict,” the President stated.

Thousands of people have been killed in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, and the international community has demanded a peaceful resolution.
