FLOP OF THE ROCKET. A ‘£10 million launch’

FLOP OF THE ROCKET. A ‘£10 million launch’.

The historic Virgin Orbit rocket takes off from a UK spaceport but fails to reach orbit.

BRITAIN’S £10 million attempt to become the first European country to launch a rocket into space from its soil failed last night.

PREPARING FOR TAKE OFF.

The LauncherOne rocket successfully launched, but “an anomaly” prevented it from reaching orbit at the last moment.

Virgin Orbit had incorrectly tweeted that it had reached Earth’s orbit before abruptly admitting failure and adding, “We are evaluating the information.”

LauncherOne was towed by Virgin Orbit’s 747 planes, known as Cosmic Girl, from Newquay, Cornwall, before taking off over the Atlantic.

It was then supposed to launch into space to deploy nine small satellites for UK defense monitoring, as well as others for firms such as those in navigational technology.

Cosmic Girl, on the other hand, returned to Cornwall with its flight crew. Virgin Orbit is thought to charge around £10 million for a launch, but fees can vary.

Melissa Thorpe, head of Spaceport Cornwall, said the horizon launch had gone to plan and she was confident they would be able to embark on another mission in the “near future”.

She stated: “It’s how you react to failure that matters, and we’ve gotten right back up, and we’re still passionate about what we do.

“We’ll see how things go over the next few days. We’re here, and we’ve got our license, so we’d love to do it again soon.”

“This isn’t the first time we’ve been knocked, this is the biggest definitely, but I feel okay and we’ll get up and we’ll go again.

“Things haven’t gone exactly as planned, but we’ve completed everything we promised at Spaceport.

“It’s just heartbreaking, and we put our hearts and souls into it.”

Meanwhile, approximately 2,000 members of the general public were given tickets to attend the event. “It was a little disappointing but a great evening,” one airport employee told Sky News.

People watching the launch

“It’s a first for Cornwall, and we work at the airport, so it’s been fantastic for us to see our little airport being shown to the world.

“It’s been a big deal for Cornwall and the airport, so putting us on the map has been brilliant.”

“Keep your fingers crossed for taking two!”

The Start Me Up mission, led by the UK Space Agency and Richard Branson’s rocket company Virgin Orbit, aimed to usher in a “new era” for the space industry.

“Tonight’s planned first orbital space launch from the UK is a historic moment,” said UKspace president Dr. Alice Bunn ahead of the launch.

“We are on the verge of a space industrial revolution.

“Small satellites provide essential services for all of us; they are the invisible enablers of our modern lives, and the UK already has a global leader in their manufacturing… which is why having a launch capability in the UK is so strategically important.”

Only a few weeks ago, Virgin Orbit was granted official launch licenses.

The long-awaited launch had been delayed from its original mid-December launch date due to technical issues and weather conditions.

Rajeev Suri, CEO of Inmarsat, one of the largest satellite companies in the UK, stated that the launch would not only help the economy during a cost-of-living crisis but would also boost defense.

“It’s fantastic to see the UK’s space sector reaping the benefits of its recent investments with the first-ever launch from a UK spaceport,” he said.

“This inspiring achievement will boost confidence in the UK’s space sector, bolster UK defense and bring fresh enthusiasm to the public consciousness.

“Not enough has been done to inspire the people of the UK or to show them the benefits we all enjoy from space.

“This launch will assist in moving the needle. Today is an excellent day to work in the UK space sector.”

According to UKspace, the UK space industry generates approximately £14.8 billion per year and currently employs approximately 42,000 people.
