Flood Chaos: River Nyando Halts Traffic on Kisumu-Nairobi Highway
Drivers on the Kisumu-Nairobi highway have endured long traffic jams in the Ahero area due to the Nyando River overflowing its banks on Saturday night, causing water to cover the Ahero bridge.
Videos shared on Gossipa2z.com reveal substantial traffic near the bridge, with nearby homes, including the Ahero police station, also submerged in water.
Kisumu County Police Commander Alphonse Wambua confirmed that reports have been received about suspected thieves exploiting the situation by robbing motorists.
In response, police officers have been sent to the area to maintain order, and motorists are seeking alternative routes to avoid the flooded zone.
Additionally, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) announced the reopening of the Nakuru-Eldoret highway, which was partially closed in Timboroa due to foundational cracks.

Persistent heavy rain across Kenya has worsened the existing damage from the floods.
As of Saturday, May 4, 2024, the government reported 219 fatalities, 164 injuries, and 72 missing persons.
Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki stated that 41,248 households have been displaced, affecting roughly 206,240 individuals.
He also mentioned that 115 camps housing 27,856 people have been established across 19 counties.
Counties expected to experience continuous heavy rains include Nairobi, Nyeri, Muranga, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Nandi, Bomet, Nakuru, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Baringo, Samburu, Turkana, Uasin Gishu, Laikipia, and Narok.
Other affected counties are Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Siaya, Homabay, Machakos, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, and Marsabit.
