Five Dead In Accident Involving Bus, Tractor, And Trailer In Kibwezi

Wednesday morning, a bus and a vehicle collided on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, resulting in the death of several individuals.  

Thursday, the Kibwezi Sub-County Police Commander, Maina, verified to the press that the accident occurred between the Makueni towns of Machinery and Kambu along the heavily traveled Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

The tragedy resulted in the deaths of five people, and several others were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

According to reports, the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday.

Photos of the accident scene revealed that the bus, a public service vehicle, was severely damaged, while the trailer was overturned.

The accident’s cause has yet to be determined.

Another public service vehicle was involved in an accident at a roundabout at the juncture of Haile Selassie Avenue and Uhuru Highway in Nairobi the day before this incident.

“Five passengers have been seriously injured with one in critical condition following a road traffic accident this afternoon at the Haile Selassie/Uhuru Highway roundabout, Nairobi,” read the statement in part.

“Our paramedics have evacuated the injured to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reports that at least 21,760 individuals were involved in road accidents in Kenya last year, indicating that the number of fatalities resulting from accidents on Kenyan roads has continued to rise.

This was an increase of 1,135 compared to 20.625,000 persons involved in road accidents in 2021.

NTSA records indicate that between January and June of this year alone, 2,124 individuals perished in motor vehicle accidents.

The increase in fatalities was attributed to incompetent and unsuitable drivers, the majority of which were pedestrians (571), followed by motorcycle operators (449).
