Fire ravages Mwea village, destroying Ksh400,000 worth of property in Kirinyaga.
At least Ksh400,000 worth of hay and property were destroyed by a fire in Mutithi village unit 4 in Mwea West sub-county, Kirinyaga County.
Mary Njeri, a witness, stated that the fire began around 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
However, a lack of water made it difficult for the villagers to put out the fire.
“Due to the prolonged drought, our rivers have dried up, and we had to helplessly watch the hay burn,” Njeri said.

Fire ravages Mwea village, destroying Ksh400,000 worth of property in Kirinyaga. The Kiandegwa police station has initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire.
Peter Gichangi, a second witness, stated that the fire reduced hay to ash.
“Firefighters from the Kirinyaga county government attempted to extinguish the blaze,” Gichangi stated.
The fire was finally extinguished at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
According to Wamumu chief Godfrey Mithamo, firefighters arrived Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
“They attempted it while responding to another fire at Kiangai in the Ndia constituency,” he said.
Some residents criticized the county government for having only one fire station located in Kerugoya.
Mary Njeri, a resident, stated, “We are requesting that the county government of Kirinyaga establish a fire station in every ward because their response time to fire incidents is too slow.”
Mithamo praised the efforts of the locals to extinguish the fire.
