Finland Saga: DPP Targets Mandago’s Property & Accounts
On Thursday, Senator Jackson Mandago of Uasin Gishu clarified that he voluntarily appeared before the police and was not taken into custody, contrary to earlier reports. This comes as prosecutors expressed their intention to freeze his assets and account about the ongoing case.
The ex-governor turned Senator is alleged to have mishandled a sum of Ksh1.1 billion, which had been gathered from parents to support their children’s education in Finland and Canada.
Mandago has refuted any allegations of misconduct and was granted release on Thursday after posting a bail of Ksh500,000. Meanwhile, the prosecutor has expressed intentions to seize his assets and access his financial accounts to reclaim the substantial sum involved.
“We will in due course make a formal application for the seizure of the accused person’s assets and the freezing of their bank accounts,” assistant prosecutor Hassan Abdi told the court.
“We want to make sure that if they are found guilty, the amount is recovered to compensate the affected families.”

The topic has sparked a public discussion, as certain students and parents have spoken up, sharing accounts of being compelled to sell their assets with the expectation of obtaining a superior education abroad. However, the authorities misused the substantial funds, resulting in the abandonment of several students.
Mandago has given his assurance that he will uphold the law and collaborate with investigators.
“As I have continued to state, I am a law-abiding citizen and a leader in this country. I began the Finland program with all good intentions,” he noted in a statement.
“And no matter what transpired, I have shown my commitment to finding a solution for the affected parents and their children.”
The Senator, along with two of his aides, has been accused of conspiring to commit a felony and all of them have been granted bail.
A third individual has not yet been brought before the court due to their absence from the country. Detectives have stated that Joseph Maritim left the country during the peak of the investigative process.
He asserted his readiness to tackle the issues brought up by parents and students who have shared stories of distress due to losing the money they worked hard for.
