Fatal Matatu Crash at Sachangwan Blackspot: 5 Lives Lost

On Monday morning, five people perished when the 14-seater matatu they were traveling in hit a bump, veered off the Nakuru-Eldoret road and crashed into a ditch.

Mwenda Mutamia, chief of police for the sub-county of Molo, confirmed that this was a self-inflicted accident.

At 2am, an Eldoret Shuttle Sacco matatu was involved in an accident.

“The vehicle was transporting passengers from Eldoret to Nairobi at a high rate of speed. Six adults and two children sustained minor injuries and were rushed to the sub-county hospital in Molo, according to Mr. Mutamia.

He advised nighttime drivers to exercise caution.

The bodies were transported to the hospital’s mortuary, while the matatu was towed to the Molo Police Station.

The accident occurred less than a month after three passengers and a secondary school student were killed near Sachangwan in the treacherous Mau Summit region.

Ngata-Sobea-Salgaa, Migaa, Karai, Kinungi, Mbaruk, Gilgil, and St. Mary’s are additional accident black spots along the Nairobi-Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

In 2017, forty people perished in an accident in the Karai region.

The Gilgil-Nakuru-Kasambara-Kikopey stretch and the Timboroa and Makutano junction – the Burnt Forest section – are additional trouble spots.

The Nairobi-Nakuru-Eldoret road is the most important in Western Kenya and connects Kenya to Uganda, Southern Sudan, Rwanda, and Burundi.

The road is utilized to transport the majority of cargo bound for the West from the Port of Mombasa and Nairobi.

Nevertheless, it is one of the most hazardous roads in the region.
