Farah Maalim Rejects Wiper Deputy Leader Role, Cites Surprise Appointment

Dadaab MP Farah Maalim has reportedly turned down an appointment from the Wiper Party to become its deputy leader.

In a statement released on Tuesday, October 8, Maalim made it clear that he has no desire to hold this senior party role and intends to inform the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) of his decision.

The outspoken legislator shared that he discovered his purported appointment to this significant party position via social media, emphasizing that he never sought the role.

“I do not wish to hold the position of Deputy Party Leader in the Wiper Party. I respectfully decline the offer and will notify the ORPP accordingly,” Farah Maalim stated.

“For everyone’s clarity, I never requested to remain as deputy party leader in Wiper. I was surprised to see in the news that I was gazetted for the position,” he added.

Maalim’s choice to reject the party position came shortly after the Wiper Party confirmed his appointment as deputy leader. In a notice, Wiper criticized the Registrar of Political Parties for issuing an outdated list of party officials.

The opposition party explained that it had informed the registrar in May about changes in its internal leadership, but the ORPP failed to publish these changes within the required 14 days, instead releasing the updated list four months later, on October 4.

“Let it be known that the Registrar’s office did not publish our intentions in the Kenya Gazette within fourteen days, as mandated by Section 20(1) of the Political Parties Act,” part of Wiper’s statement read.

Wiper further mentioned that Maalim, whose name was originally put forward for the deputy leader position, had been de-whipped due to his controversial remarks about young protesters.

Additionally, the party revealed that steps to revoke Maalim’s party membership are underway, despite the MP’s failure to respond to multiple summons regarding the accusations against him.

“Once the Disciplinary Committee recommends that Hon. Maalim be relieved of his current position and expelled from the party, this will require ratification by a special National Delegates Convention (NDC),” stated Wiper Party.

The party also indicated its intention to pursue legal action against the ORPP to safeguard its rights. “We therefore demand a public explanation from the ORPP regarding the four-month delay in gazetting our party officials,” Wiper concluded.
