Family of Kenyan Facing Execution in Saudi Arabia Contradicts UDA’s Claim of Ksh 129M Payment
Less than 24 hours after UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar announced that the Muslim World League had paid Ksh129.5 million ($1 million) to secure the release of Steven Munyakho, his family has raised concerns, stating they have not received any official confirmation.
Family Demands Official Communication
In a press statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the Committee for the Release of Munyakho stated that they were yet to receive an official response despite multiple inquiries.
“We are aware of reports that one of the institutional benefactors has paid the remaining 2.9 million Saudi Riyals of the 3.5 million riyals blood money set by the court. However, we have not received an official communication. We have contacted officials in Kenya and Saudi Arabia and will update the public as soon as we receive confirmation,” the committee stated.
The committee added that if the information is accurate, it would be a great relief for the many well-wishers supporting the “Save Stevo Campaign.”
Munyakhoโs Conviction and Imprisonment
Munyakho was convicted of manslaughter in 2012 after a fatal altercation with a friend. The victim’s family appealed, leading to an enhanced sentence of execution unless Ksh120,750,000 (3.5 million riyals) was paid as blood money.
For the past 13 years, he has been held at Dhaban Prison in Jeddah. As of yesterday, he remained incarcerated, awaiting further updates.
Government’s Role in Negotiations
On Tuesday, during an Iftar event at State House hosted by President William Ruto, Omar announced that negotiations between Saudi Arabia, Kenya, and the Muslim World League had successfully led to Munyakho’s release.
Omar stated that key officials from both countries played a crucial role in securing the $1 million payment, which was sent to Saudi authorities as a settlement.
Diplomatic Efforts to Secure Freedom
Omar hinted that President Ruto was directly involved in diplomatic efforts to save Munyakho.
“Last year, we brought the Secretary-General of the Muslim World League to State House. Through SUPKEM and the President, we made a passionate request regarding Munyakhoโs case,” Omar said.
“Both our ambassadors have confirmed that the request has been honored, the $1 million has been paid, and the Kenyan will return home safely.”
Awaiting Final Confirmation
Despite these assurances, Munyakhoโs family remains anxious, awaiting official confirmation from the government. Until then, they continue to seek clarity on his release and return to Kenya.
