Fake! EACC disown statement accusing Oparanya of lying under oath

A viral statement attributed to EACC Spokesman Eric Ngumbi indicating that the Commission accused Cooperative CS Nominee Wycliffe Oparanya of lying under oath before the National Assembly committee on appointments is fake.

The fake statement claimed that Oparanya, who was summoned to the EACC offices, recorded a statement on August 23, 2023.

It added that Oparanya, who had been arrested alongside his two wives from their Nairobi home, was grilled for seven hours during which the statement was recorded.

The Star contacted EACC spokesman Eric Ngumbi who denied authoring such a letter.

“The viral statement is fake as the EACC has not commented on the issues raised by Oparanya during his vetting,” Ngumbi said.

Oparanya had earlier stated that the EACC had never called him to write a statement regarding the alleged abuse of office and money laundering claims against him.

He told the Committee on Appointments that he has never been involved in corruption and if approved, the Cooperatives’ money will be safe in his hands.

He however stated that he went to the Integrity Centre to collect his children’s phones which he alleged had been taken by people who identified themselves as EACC detectives.

“While there, I did not record any statement. They gave me the phones after hours,” he told the committee.

“Nobody has come to me to write a statement. I have never been given a chance to tell my story.”

Oparanya also claimed the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution has never contacted him on any case or allegations.
