Factors Parents Should Consider When Selecting High School for Their Children
As students who sat for the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) prepare themselves to join secondary school in January 2024, many parents are still struggling to choose the best academic institution for their children.
The uncertainty is mostly driven by the desire to ensure that their children land at an institution with a stellar historical academic record and an overall good environment where they will grow and feel comfortable.
Other key factors that parents should consider include; the geographic location of the school, discipline, and security.
With many schools being implicated in examination irregularities, parents should also investigate the culture at the institution to ensure their kids get quality education.
There is also the most important factor of all which is compatibility.
Despite some schools being widely recognized as the best, some students still struggle to assimilate, which counts as a major reason why selecting the right school is paramount.
Another important factor to consider is the fee structure and whether it aligns with your budget.

No parent wants to send their children to an institution where they will be constantly sent home due to a lack of school fees.
Another aspect that parents should interrogate is the history of the school as some institutions have over the years developed a culture of unrest where students burn dormitories and other critical infrastructure.
Parents should also take the initiative to make sure that teachers in the prospective school are qualified and have a good performance track record.
One of the ways you can go about this is by ascertaining whether the tutors are accredited by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) as mandated by the Ministry of Education.
Lastly, if the school has a high population, ensure it has corresponding infrastructure and resources.
This includes establishing whether the school has enough classrooms, if its laboratories are well equipped, whether or not teaching and non-teaching staff have the right temperament and experience, and if the institution has adequate facilities such as sporting infrastructure.
