Ezra Chiloba’s Cryptic Millions: Mystery Surrounds Source of KSh 800M Wealth

Former Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) director general Ezra Chiloba has declared his net worth.

Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations, Chiloba said he is worth KSh 800 million.

The committee chaired by Belgut MP Nelson Koech vetted Chiloba on Thursday, April 11, for the position of Consul-General for Kenya in Los Angeles, United States of America.

How Ezra Chiloba made wealth

The lawmakers sought to know how Chiloba amassed the wealth at the age of 46, with a short career stint in the private sector.

Chiloba explained that he started working in 2001 while in school.

He noted that his wealth has been growing over the years from employment income, consultancy services, and farming activities.

“I am a farmer, and I engage in agribusiness where I plant and sell avocados in my Kitale farm. I was able to save money from my formal employment,” said Chiloba.

Ezra Chiloba’s career profile

Before his nomination to the consul post, Chiloba worked as the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) director general where he resigned over allegations of gross misconduct.

He also served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) between 2015 and 2017.

Chiloba also worked at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Kenya National Commission of Human Rights, Centre for Minority Rights Development, South Consulting Africa, and Oxfam Novib.

Why do MPs question Ezra Chiloba’s wealth?

The MPs sought to know why Chiloba was implicated in the mortgage scheme scandal at the IEBC.

However, Chiloba defended himself based on an acquittal by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak said that the investigation body found no sufficient evidence to penalize Ezra Chiloba.

The former IEBC CEO was accused of misappropriating the KSh 622 million staff mortgage scheme alongside other offenses.

Mubarak recommended that the Authority review its human resource policy and procedure manual.
