Exclusive: Maina Njenga, Former Mungiki Leader, Walks Free
Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga was freed on May 25 after police whisked him away from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Kiambu Road.
Njenga, who had appeared before the DCI early in the day, was released on his recognizance.
Police reportedly released the ex-Mungiki leader after driving him around the city.
Police had driven Njenga to an unknown location, forcing his attorneys to pursue the detectives. His lead attorney, Ndegwa Njiru, claimed that the police intended to detain him at the Kiambu Police Station.

“We sat there for the entire day and no one spoke to us. He has not made any statements to date.
The attorney stated, “We’re currently en route to Kiambu because we suspect they’ve made their way there.”
Njiru asserted that the police tricked them at the headquarters, allowing them to secretly abduct his client.
This was also confirmed by the leader of the Narc Kenya organization, Martha Karua, who went to the DCI headquarters to show support for the beleaguered ally of former prime minister Raila Odinga.
Karua and other Azimio leaders believed that the police’s actions constituted a political witch hunt.
“DCI is violating Maina Njenga’s right to legal counsel, and we fear that this will compromise his right to a fair trial. Is his security assured under these conditions?” She struck a pose.
Njenga had been ordered to report to the headquarters for questioning regarding a search of a property he owned in Nakuru County.
DCI indicated that a firearm, ammunition, and rolls of marijuana were recovered during the May 22 exercise.
