Exclusive: KAA Reveals Startling Details of JKIA Plane Crash During Emergency Drill
Wednesday, May 31, Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) clarified that earlier reports of an incident at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) were a full-scale emergency drill.
KAA indicated in a statement that the exercise involved a simulated plane crash at the airport while overflying Nairobi.
The authority stated that KAA organized the exercise as part of its ongoing dedication to enhancing airport emergency response capabilities and ensuring the highest level of preparedness for unanticipated events.
“The primary objective of this exercise was to test and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the airport’s emergency response procedures, coordination among various agencies, and the overall readiness of the airport’s personnel,” KAA wrote.
However, the authority informed the public that the incident was handled effectively and posed no threat to passengers or other JKIA operators.
“KAA would like to assure the public that this incident was entirely simulated and did not pose any real threat to passengers, crew, or airport operations. Throughout the entire exercise, the safety and security of all individuals involved was a top priority,” the statement added.

After the successful drill, KAA Managing Director Alex Gitari praised the officials, stating that they demonstrated a high level of preparedness for dealing with disaster.
“At Kenya Airports Authority, safety is our top priority, and regular emergency drills are a vital part of our commitment to ensuring the highest level of preparedness. Gitari praised the professionalism and dedication of all personnel involved in this operation.
Following an earlier statement announcing an incident at an international airport, KAA provided clarification. Some travelers and social media users expressed concern regarding the alleged incident.
Some posted on various social media platforms that they witnessed JKIA emitting massive amounts of smoke.
However, the authority allayed fears by confirming the presence of the response team on the ground. In addition, the authority informed all passengers and other Kenyans that the incident was a comprehensive emergency drill involving a simulated plane crash.
Different organizations conduct emergency drills to assess their readiness to respond to disasters and accidents. Village Market recently conducted a drill to test its readiness.
In 2022, the US Embassy in Gigiri, Nairobi, conducted a security exercise involving soldiers and road blockades. The exercise was successful, instilling confidence in security agencies’ ability to respond to emergencies.
