Ex-Sports CS Amina Mohamed Lands Commonwealth Role

Amina Mohammed, the ex-Cabinet Secretary for Sports, has been appointed as the Special Envoy for Sport, Enterprise, and Development by the Commonwealth Secretary-General.

Ambassador Amina will now offer guidance on developing strategic initiatives to garner backing and unite leadership in support of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets about sports, development, and economic advancement.

According to the Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland KC, Ms. Amina is expected to participate in different Commonwealth events centered around sports, including ministerial meetings.

“In her role, she will provide strategic directions to mobilize support and rally leadership for SDG targets related to sport, development, and economic growth. Ms Mohamed will also contribute to various Commonwealth gatherings focused on sport, including ministerial meetings,” the statement reads.

At the age of 63, Ms. Amina, a professional lawyer, played a crucial diplomatic role that significantly contributed to Kenya’s robust relationships with its allies during her tenure as the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, spanning from May 2013 to February 2018.

After her predecessor, Mr. Rashid Echesa was removed, she assumed the sports docket. This change occurred as President William Ruto appointed Mr. Echesa as the Chairperson of the Kenya Water Towers Agency Board.

Amina formerly served as the Ambassador and Permanent Representative for the Kenyan diplomatic mission in Geneva. Additionally, she played key roles in the ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.

She additionally fulfilled roles as the chair, coordinator, and spokesperson for the African Group within the Human Rights Commission of the WTO. In 2002, she assumed the role of acting president at the Conference on Disarmament.

The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth revealed the selection of two additional distinguished leaders to serve as Special Envoys alongside Ms. Amina.

Professor Manahel Thabet has assumed the position of the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Science and Technology, while Professor Dame Carol Black, who chairs the British Library and the Centre for Ageing Better, has been designated as the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Ageing Well.

The three representatives have been tasked with the responsibility of advancing the principles and ideals of the Commonwealth.

“I am confident that the relentless drive, exceptional talent, and considerable experience of these special envoys will help us fill that gap more swiftly and effectively. Together with their support, we will now provide more comprehensive assistance to our 56 member countries as they accelerate efforts to achieve the SDGs and transform the lives of the 2.5 billion people who proudly call the Commonwealth their home,” Commonwealth SG said.
