Ex-Raila’s Aide Silas Jakakimba Elected UDA Secretary in Homa Bay: Shifts in Political Dynamics
Silas Jakakimba, once an aide to ODM leader Raila Odinga, has secured the position of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Homa Bay secretary, winning 101 votes out of 147 in an election held on Monday. The voting took place at the county UDA party headquarters in Homa Bay town, with 159 delegates participating.
Having switched allegiance from ODM to UDA in 2023 following William Ruto’s presidential victory in the 2022 general election, Jakakimba expressed optimism on Monday regarding UDA’s potential to surpass ODM in membership registration in Homa Bay, traditionally an ODM stronghold since 2007.
Jakakimba emphasized that UDA has established organizational structures across Homa Bay’s polling stations, wards, and eight constituencies, aiming to eclipse ODM in both membership and political representation come the 2027 general election.
Reflecting on the competitive nature of the secretary seat contest, Jakakimba interpreted it as evidence of UDA’s growing influence in the county. He pledged to serve not only party members but all residents of Homa Bay.

Halake Diida, a UDA member of the National Elections Board overseeing the election, reported that 44 candidates vied for various positions. He affirmed that the election proceeded smoothly without any technical difficulties, allowing all delegates to exercise their voting rights.
Kennedy Obuya, former Imara Daima MCA, emerged victorious as the county chairman, with Kennedy Ondiek, former Kibiri MCA, withdrawing from the race to facilitate Obuya’s uncontested win. Rosemary Rumo, a former aspirant for the Homa Bay woman representative seat on a Jubilee ticket, will serve as Obuya’s deputy.
Aggrey Otore secured the position of county professional group representative, while John Odek will represent people with disabilities. Kennedy Ongati, a confidant of Interior PS Raymond Omollo, won the organizing secretary’s seat, and Catherine Oyaro was elected women’s representative.
Among other winners in the predominantly ODM-dominated region are Seraphine Omollo (treasurer), Maureen Adhiambo (representative of MSMEs), and Betty Kisiara (representing religious groups).
Notable figures elected as county delegates include former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, former Homa Bay MP Martin Ogindo, IT expert Mark Matunga, Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Authority (LVSWWDA) chairman Odoyo Owidi, Jacqueline Omiti, Millicent Akoth, and Margret Ochanda.
