Ex-Mungiki co-founder fires warning shot at Maina Njenga
Former Mungiki leader Ndura Waruinge cautioned Maina Njenga against any actions that might disrupt the ongoing peace efforts within the nation.
Waruinge, now a preacher following a transformation, advised the politician to refrain from engaging in any violent actions that could lead to bloodshed.
“Maina Njenga is my cousin; he is my former colleague in Mungiki but I just want to ask him to tone down. Kenya needs everybody; we need each other,” he said.
“Don’t ever do anything that can cause chaos in the country today, Kenya belongs to everyone, even if you do not like the president. We are all Kenyans.”
He expressed that Kenya must maintain the progress it has made in terms of peace and unity and should not regress.
Waruinge and Njenga were the co-founders of the proscribed sect.
His feelings were expressed a day following the prevention of a scheduled gathering arranged by Njenga in Nyeri on Sunday by security officers.
Over 250 individuals believed to be associated with the religious group were detained during the enforcement operation across different areas of the region.
The much-publicised meeting was to be held at Kabiru-ini grounds.

Nyeri County Commissioner Pius Murugu gave an order on Saturday, prohibiting the assembly and instructing security personnel and local community watch groups to stay vigilant and prevent any gatherings within their respective areas.
“We will not allow that meeting in our area. Nyeri has been a peaceful country. We are warning all those people who are resurfacing in the name of mungiki that they will be dealt with accordingly,” Murugu said.
Njenga stated that the purpose of the meeting was to plan the future course of action for the inhabitants of the influential region in terms of voting.
In a previous interview with the Star, he mentioned that the audience would comprise seniors, business figures, religious leaders, local governmental representatives, and leaders from various other areas.
The prohibition of the gathering came after Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s remarks, where he emphasized that unauthorized meetings would not be tolerated. He instructed security personnel to safeguard both life and property.
