Ex-MCA Arrested for Posing as Anti-Corruption Officer Conning Kenyans
A former Member of the County Assembly (MCA) has been arrested for impersonating an officer from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC). The arrest took place in Komarock, where detectives caught him alongside two other suspects at an entertainment venue.
Fake Anti-Corruption Officers Caught
The EACC confirmed that the former Kyululu Ward MCA and his accomplices were targeting a victim when they were nabbed. Upon further investigation, detectives found mobile phones, 22 SIM cards, and eight notebooks containing details of their intended victims.
How the Fraud Worked
According to the EACC, the suspects pretended to be investigators and extorted money from senior government officials and heads of parastatals. Many victims fell for their scheme, fearing legal action.
Public Warning
The EACC has warned the public to be cautious and avoid falling for fraudsters who claim to be anti-corruption officers. They advised people to always check for official job cards when approached by individuals claiming to be EACC officials. The commission also clarified that anyone of interest is officially summoned through written communication.
Rise in Government Impersonation Cases
This case is one of many involving imposters pretending to be government officials. In October 2024, an individual posing as the EACCโs Assistant Director of Intelligence Operations conned several people, including state officials, out of millions. That same month, two fraudsters pretending to be Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) officials were caught extorting shop owners in Bamburi.
Authorities continue to crack down on these scams, urging the public to report any suspicious individuals claiming to be government officers.
